The competition was named after Ron in 2018. Ron was a huge influence at Stowmarket VC over more than thirty-five years. He was also a major player in the establishment of the Suffolk Volleyball Association and his influence led to the formation of Stow Stingers, Newmarket VC, Bury Bobcats, Ipswich Ravens, SCC Seagulls and maybe more. Mervyn Evans wrote a touching tribute to Ron which was published via Volleyball England's Time Out newsletter. He was also awarded the Special Achievement Award in the Stowmarket Town Awards.
